Turning Complex Benefits Data Into Clear Member Communications
Benefits data is inherently complex, often captured in highly granular, operational formats that are not designed for member consumption. Translating that data into clear, readable, and consistent language is one of the most critical — and error-prone — steps in producing member materials.
In this video, Al Valenti, VP, CodySoft®, walks through how structured PBP data can be transformed into plain, member-facing language using standardized rules and templates.
Translating Raw Benefits Data Into Member-Friendly Language
Raw PBP data is typically coded with copays, limits, thresholds, and conditions at a granular level. To make this information usable for members, those data elements must be interpreted through standardized rule sets that determine how benefits are expressed in clear, readable sentences.
Template-driven language generation ensures that phrasing remains consistent across documents. Semantic rules enforce standard terminology — for example, using “copay” instead of “copayment” or “coinsurance” instead of variable phrasing — so benefits are described the same way everywhere they appear. Automated handling of conditional logic allows complex, multi-tier benefits to be parsed and expressed accurately without manual intervention.
Why Consistency Matters for Member Experience and Compliance
Consistent benefit language plays a critical role in both member understanding and regulatory compliance. When benefits are described differently across documents, even small variations can lead to confusion, complaints, or increased scrutiny from regulators.
By standardizing how benefits data is translated into language, plans reduce ambiguity and improve readability across all materials. This consistency helps members better understand their coverage while giving internal teams confidence that benefits are being communicated accurately and in alignment with approved plan data.
